Are You Accountable to Yourself?

be accountableOh! I wonder how this has to do with blogging or entrepreneurship, you think?

Take this out of the equation and your blog and online business is at risk! Are you truly accountable to yourself?

You start a blog and you keep working on it, you keep on going and you think that is all. No! That is not all, it is just the beginning.

If you begin to treat your blog like a business then you will know why it is important to be accountable.

You started a blog and you want to achieve success with it, you have the intention of writing everyday but there are weeks you might not even write more than two posts. Have you ever though about it this way, “What if my life depends on my blog?“.

If you are asked this question, what if your life depends on your blog, is this how you will be doing?

The time has come to change, there is no more need to procrastinate, there is no more need to waste time – Get started, be accountable.

It is no Excuse!

Many people begin to treat their blogs anyhow because it is not turning out as they expected.

If you have a business, even with a bright idea, you can’t expect the business to begin to bring in great income from day one, there is time for everything, your business has a time-frame for its success and so is your blog.

It doesn’t matter what your blog is facing now and the truth is even the best of men, the greatest people who ever lived faced their hard times.

Life is not a bed of roses and it is only what you make it, you should not just expect everything to begin to flourish overnight until you have put in something great into it! – This is where accountability comes in.

Have you ever thought of it this way? You have a blog, have you ever thought of taking a pen and a paper and then jotting down things as they work? Have you ever though about having a strict schedule for your blog, a time when everything ends and your blog takes over, a time you spend building up relationships, a time you spend getting traffic in order to make sure your blog is a success?

You can only get what you put in and you shouldn’t expect to reap where you have not sown.

The importance of accountability is to make sure you are truly sowing, at the right time.

The Importance of Accountability

1. Accountability helps make sure you are time conscious.

Everything has timing, a time when things work, and unfortunately, if those things are not done then you might not get the desired results.

2. It is easy to get distracted, you have your mail, you have skype, gtalk and the likes. You have every tool that can make it easy for you to chat with others, have you ever thought about these things reducing your productivity?

3. It is important to be principled and strict to schedules. Human beings are not easily controlled (not even by our own selves), this is where accountability comes in.

Being accountable is very important, not only to your boss, not only to those you must be accountable to but also to yourself. Are you accountable to yourself.

    Awesome post Oni!
I know that I personally get distracted all of the time if I don’t make a conscious effort not to. Being worried about distractions is the main reason I still don’t have a facebook! Haha.

But yeah, giving your blog half an effort is definitely going to reduce the success your blog would have. Awesome stuff.

    • Hi CJ,

You are absolutely right! Being accountable to yourself is very important because it helps you focus more on important things thereby giving results.

Concerning facebook, yeah! It is really a great distraction and I don’t think I can have time for it either ;)

Thanks a lot for the nice comment,

  2. I agree Onibalusi. I repeat this affirmation from Bob Proctor:

“I am responsible for my life, for my feelings and for every result I get.”

As for remaining accountable I set up a strict schedule. I work for 45 minutes then break for 10 or 15 minutes, sticking to this routine for 8 – 12 hours (or more) day. I list out what I will accomplish each hour. This creates order in mind.

Thanks for sharing the important reminder.

  3. Impressive article Oni! And very interesting topic. Being accountable will let you overcome procrastination and beat deadlines earlier that you expect. Its natural for human beings to be distracted sometimes but we have to control ourselves especially if our business is on the line.

  4. Being accountable to yourself is like having discipline. We need to focus on one thing if we want to make it big. If we are trying to make a great blog then we should focus on making the best out of it. Your post is really great. It is like an eye opener to those who are losing their focus.

Things can get choked up on you especially when you are doing a one man thing. I think being accountable can also help reduce your rate of procrastination. Procrastination is a silent killer of time.

Good post! One thing I’ve learned about myself is that it’s easy to be accountable to others (like in a job) but it’s hard for me to be accountable to myself.

It’s funny that I can be accountable at a job I hate, but I’m not accountable to myself when it comes to achieving my dreams. Luckily, I’ve been working hard on it, and I’m becoming more accountable. You’re right, there is no excuse!

    Hi Onibalusi,

I think blogging is a long term project that requires decent treatment. Distractions will always a part of life, and it’s up to the individual to prioritize their tasks. As the saying goes, what you put in is what you get.
