The Top 5 Ways Bloggers Can Use the Power of Twitter

by Onibalusi Bamidele on May 24, 2010 · 44 comments

Blog writing has quickly become a very popular medium. Each day, hundreds of blogs are being developed. So in this sea of blogs, how can you stand out from the crowd? The answer is: through social media. Social media is changing the way bloggers can market their sites. As with anything on the internet, gaining exposure so you don’t disappear amongst the other bloggers is vital. A great way to do this is through Twitter. Twitter has taking social networking to a whole new level. You have the ability to gain thousands of readers with one simple “tweet”. Let’s look at the top 5 ways you can harness the power of Twitter for your blog:

  • Increase in Traffic – With Twitter you can not only have your friends and families following you but you have the opportunity to reach millions of people each and every day. These individuals, if they find your “tweets” interesting enough can choose to follow you. So when you post a new “tweet” they are alerted and can read your latest post. By posting a quick, attention grabbing post with a link to your latest blog post, you’ve just increased your chances of being seen by all your followers.
  • Networking – Twitter allows you to connect with millions of people worldwide. This will allow you to find other bloggers who may be in your niche area. By networking with other like-minded bloggers, you’re expanding your readership as well as your blogging abilities. By networking with other bloggers you can learn from one another as well as brainstorm ideas.
  • Connect with Business Possibilities – Twitter is not just a social medium for the everyday person. It’s also a network of business owners. By using Twitter, you have the opportunity to connect with possible business partners that can enhance your blog. It’s a great way of finding possible business sources to generate revenue as millions of companies are seeking corporate bloggers to assist them.
  • Credibility – By developing your blog and posting your “tweets” on Twitter, you are slowly becoming the expert in your area. Readers are looking for advice and information from those who are “in the know”. Each blog you write and each “tweet” you use to promote it, builds your foundation and credibility in your niche market. So you become the expert.  The one people look to for the information they need.
  • Q & A – Twitter is a great forum to get valuable feedback from others as well as ask questions. This information can assist you in developing an informative and widely read blog. While you know your subject matter, everyone get’s stumped. Looking for new topics to write about? Poll the masses for some great inspiration.

Twitter is a valuable tool that any blogger should take advantage of. It is a powerful marketing tool and if you aren’t harnessing the power of it, it could be the difference between success and failure of your blog.

Well said Oni,
There are so many benefits to using Twitter to help your blog. Though I must say, I’m guilty of only now starting to use it. Haha, but I’ve started to build a following and I’ll see where it takes me!

I like Twitter. It’s much easier to have a conversation with your readers on twitter than on your blog. And it’s a compliment. Sometimes you have different types of readers on your blog than on your twitter so you will reach more people

Hi Patsy,

Twitter can expand your presence like no other social network if used properly. Tweet content and make friends. It’s the simple, quick way to grow your network.

I like each of your tips, especially the Q and A advice. The power of twitter lies in engagement. When chatting with others you become a person, not just a follower of # on the screen. People appreciate people over things :)

Great advice!

I agree with you that social media is changing the way bloggers can market their websites and blogs. But not only twitter, there are many other social networks like Fcebook, Mixx, Faves etc, that are helpful in marketing and making you known everywhere on the web.

You have a great blog, Onibalusi, and you are spot on with using Twitter to build a network and community.

One thing I do on my blog is video, both fun and serious. That, too, is a great vehicle.

And thank you for the idea your layout gave me for my blog.

Keep up the great work.

Cheers

Twitter is a very good way of exposing our works. If have been using Twitter to tweet my post but I must admit that I’m a little bit low when it comes to making an interesting headline for my links. Still, I know I will earn more in the long run. :-)

Hi Onibalusi,

Thanks for sharing this experience but in my opinion Twitter is good for sharing news, not for networking. For opening networks, I am now using Facebook. I think Facebook is more than Twitter in getting traffic as well as build brand awareness on the Internet.

Photos and eyewitness accounts are being updated every minute, and a lot of Americans on the site are caning their location to Iran to confuse Iran’s government officials monitoring the site.
